When he awoke at nine that morning after a few fitful hours of sleep, Apollon lay beside him—still, his colour odd. Theo shook him and his cousin seemed to rouse from a very deep sleep. Theo saw the puncture wounds then—in little pairs, on Apollon’s throat and chest, like vampire bites. He blinked as he studied them.

Theo was so exhausted, he fell back asleep, in spite of the horror he felt at his cousin’s wounds. A few hours later, Apollon shook him awake.

“I’m going mad, Theo. I have to have a cocktail.”

Theo’s eyes opened. He was relieved to see no bite marks—they must have been a bad dream, because Apollon’s body was clean.

What wasn’t a dream was the raging fire in his own throat. He clutched it, his tongue feeling thick and hot in his mouth.

The two cousins panicked. In spite of their resolve to stay away from the cocktail, they threw on clothes and hurried down the road to Koukouvágia. It was closed.

They looked at each other, bewildered and in pain.

“Let’s try to make our own cocktails,” Theo said, barely able to talk. He’d never felt so bone weary or so old. They wobbled back to the hotel.

“I know,” Apollon said. “There’s a bar by the hotel pool. We’ll get one there.”

The thought cheered them up, helping them to pick up a little speed until they reached the hotel.

“I’m sweating like I just ran a fucking thirty kilometre marathon,” Apollon panted.

Theo was too addled to convert that into miles, but knew it was around twenty.

“Yeah.” He nodded. “Me too.”
